PAL (Phase Alternating Line)
Europe’s television video signal standard is known as PAL.  PAL uses 625 picture lines and a 50Hz field frequency, and is incompatible with NTSC.

Pan and Tilt
A device upon which a camera can be mounted that allows movement in both the azimuth (pan) and in the vertical plane (tilt).

Pan/Tilt Preset Positioning
Follower pots are installed on pan/tilt unit to allow feedback to the controller and provides information relevant to horizontal and vertical positioning, allowing the controller to quickly adjust to a pre-selected scene automatically.

Partition
This is the process of splitting your alarm system in two or more "partitions", arming and disarming each area separately while using only one phone line, and paying only one monitoring fee. Many small businesses use a system with this option.  For example, if a machine shop has an office area that is open during business hours, and a shop that is open 24 hours because of the midnight shift, they can protect the office area while allowing the employees to move freely in the shop area. Sometimes this option can be used in a residential setting, as well.  For example, a homeowner who rents a portion of his/her home to tenants can arm his/her portion of the house separately from the tenant's portion. Or, a homeowner has a garage or work area that is not attached to his house, but wants to arm that area separately while he is at home.  Each partition can have its own keypad, or one keypad can be used to access each partition.  The monitoring company will know which partition is sending the alarm, and will send the authorities to the appropriate area of the house/business.

Passive
If a system component is non-powered, it is considered passive.

Patch Panel
A panel where circuits are terminated and facilities provided for interconnecting between circuits by means of jacks and plugs.

PCMCIA Card (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association)
These storage devices resemble a credit card and are typically used to expand the hardware functionality of portable devices such as laptops.  In video surveillance application, PCMCIA cards can be used with portable PCs to add real-time full motion video capture of live security video.  When used with digital cameras, they provide portable storage and a method for saving and transferring photos between digital cameras and PCs.

Peak Pulse Amplitude
The maximum absolute peak value of a pulse, excluding those portions considered to be unwanted, such as spikes.
